Software Engineering Intern
We usually respond within a week
Zenith's learning platform runs the daily work of our tutors and students across three programmes: JC, Secondary and Primary. Attendance, lesson materials, quizzes, and the weekly reports that tell a tutor which students are behind all live there. The engineering team that builds it is small, and the list of things that would help real people is longer than the team can reach. You'll take work off that list and own it end to end.
What you'll actually do
Build and ship features in our learning platform, frontend and backend. React and TypeScript on the front, Node, Express, Prisma and PostgreSQL on the back, running on AWS.
Work out what a feature should actually do, then build it. This is half the job. Our tutors used to find out who missed a lesson by scrolling attendance sheets one class at a time; now a report arrives in their Telegram at nine on Monday morning. Someone had to decide what counts as a miss, what to do about a student who made the lesson up on Thursday, and how to word a message a busy person will read.
Work on the integrations that keep the platform fed: our student information system, the Telegram bot that ops and tutors work in all day, Google Sheets that staff edit by hand, and the video and email providers.
Write the tests and the database migrations that let the next person change your code safely. Three programmes run on one codebase, so a change that's right for JC and wrong for Primary is a bug.
Document what you built, so the next person (including future-you) doesn't have to reverse-engineer anything.
What we're looking for
Comfortable with TypeScript or JavaScript. You don't need to have used our stack.
Can read code you didn't write, in a system you don't know, and work out what it does before changing it.
You use AI coding tools and you read what they hand back. We all use them here, every day. What matters is catching the part that's quietly wrong.
Curious about business context, willing to ask "who uses this, and what will they do differently?" before building a feature.
Self-directed: we'll give you problems and context, not step-by-step instructions.
What you'll get out of it
End-to-end ownership of features that tutors and students use, from the first conversation to the release. Rare for an intern role.
Direct mentorship from the engineering team; no middle layer between you and the people making architectural decisions.
A concrete portfolio piece you can point to: "I built the thing the tutors and students at that company open every week."
A look at how a growing business decides what to build, useful whether you go into engineering, product, or startups later.
